Undernutrition and hidden hunger are major public health challenges in India. According to NFHS 3 (2005-06), about 40 percent of children under 3 years of age are underweight; 45 percent are stunted and 23 percent are wasted. About 70 percent of children under 5 years and 55 percent of (15 to 49 years) adolescent girls and women are anemic.

Lack of permanent market, low quantities of milk production, poor breeding, limited veterinary services and shortages in cow feed were the challenges in dairy sector in Bangladesh till the nineties. To overcome these problems BRAC launched its dairy initiative in 1998 in the country.
