WASH and Healthcare for enabling Agriculture - Nutrition linkages in India
The National policy for Empowerment of Women (2001) does provide that special attention be given to the needs of women in the provision of safe drinking water, sewage disposal, toilet facilities and sanitation within accessible reach of households, especially in rural areas and urban slums. And, the National Food Security Act (2013) also provides for the provision of access to ‘safe and adequate drinking water and sanitation’ and ‘healthcare’ for advancing food security. LANSA research demonstrates that an adult woman’s BMI is not only dependent on dietary diversity but also requires enabling environment conditions, and therefore the Policy Brief lays stress on the importance of WASH for effective agriculture-nutrition linkages.
